LISTEN UP PEDESTRIANS…MEDIA RELEASE (8/18/10) FROM TUCSON POLICE DEPT.
“Pedestrians are required to utilize marked crosswalks or roadway intersections when crossing the street in the downtown area and in all business areas. When crossing at an intersection with signal lights, pedestrians can only cross when the lights allow for it. Violations of Tucson City Code 20-92 – Jaywalking currently carries a $161 fine.”

We anticipate having our 5000th individual MMM Athlete join us on or before September 13. So we are going to celebrate! TEP will provide new “blinky lights” for everyone on that evening. After that, our blinky lights will be available on loan to every MMM Athlete who needs one. Just take one from the loan box and return it after your walk/run. TEP LIGHTS THE WAY WITH BLINKY LIGHTS FOR ALL MMM ATHLETES

In September the evenings will cool, but with the heat goes the light. Thanks to TEP we will have new blinky lights for every MMM Athlete. When they arrive we will give away the first 500 lights. Then they will be available for loan every Monday until spring. Take one from the loan box, wear it for a walk/run, replace it for next week. What a beautiful sight it will be…blinking lights on the backs of more than twice as many walkers and runners as there were in 2009. Thank you TEP for keeping us safe.

ERNIE MAKES ‘EM SWEAT AT ZUMBA…Ernesto Dorame Perez was a Zumba student in 2007, and was inspired and encouraged by his instructor to become certified to teach. And that’s just what he did. In 2008 Ernie was certified in four different types of Zumba, and is now based at Armory Park Senior Center. He draws a huge crowd on Monday nights. As you can see (below), many of them are our own MMM Athletes. With a satisfied grin Ernie says, “I love their enthusiasm. And I know they are really working hard because I can see them sweat. In fact, they make me sweat!”

MMM HEROES DO DOUBLE DUTY!!

Johnie Castro and Gina Hamon did double duty as good citizens on Monday. While passing under the underpass on Broadway, carrying nearly full bags of trash, they came upon a car stalled in traffic. The two dropped their bags (temporarily of course and pushed the car through several on/off ramps to a safe spot. Thank you Johnie and Gina, for making MMM proud!

Tip: If your bag gets too heavy, find a trash bin along the way and dump it out…then there’s room for more without “breaking your back”. MAYNARDS/ RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE ON MONDAY…Maynards will host an emergency blood drive on Monday, July 19^th from 3pm – 6pm. You will find the “Blood Bus” in front of Maynards Market. Blood supply is low this summer and you can help them reach their goal of 15 – 20 units on Monday. Maybe this is a good day to skip your walk in the heat, and give blood instead. If you do, we will include you in the special drawing. Think about it.

Saguaro National Park Labor Day 8-Miler…Come run the hills of Saguaro: our rolling 8 mile course loops its way through a beautiful cactus forest at Saguaro National Park East in the foothills of the scenic Rincon Mountains. A 2 mile fitness walk &run is also offered, covering a flatter course & suitable for strollers & families. A $5 National Park Service permit is included in your entry fee.

Tucson Medical Center Get Moving Tucson… The 6th Annual Get Moving Tucson is scheduled to take place in Downtown Tucson on Saturday morning, October 9th. Start time is 8:00 AM for both races. This is the 31st running of the annual SAR 10-miler and 5K running race & non-competitive family fitness walk. Thanks to the new title sponsor: Tucson Medical Center.

OO2 is a unique, one-of-a-kind class developed by O2 Modern Fitness.

OO2 is a moderate to high-intensity workout that combines indoor cycling, military style calisthenics and muscle conditioning exercises using body weight and bungee cords. The class is designed to strengthen all major muscles groups, develop core strength, muscular endurance and aerobic capacity. Each class will be one hour in duration.

OO2 will have a basic ratio of 70/30 cardiovascular to strength training. The Spinning portion of the class will be a variation of a traditional spinning class, a high energy aerobic workout on our state of the art indoor bikes. X50 MMM ATHLETES GET AWARD!

It pays to be first! We planned to celebrate the first 10 MMM Athletes to reach 50 MMM Mondays. But, alas, we had a tie for #10, so we celebrated all 11. Each of these very regular MMM Athletes received a Maynards gift certificate. Budget  (not yet at least) will not allow us to continue with the gifts, but it was fun to do it once. In honor of this significant accomplishment, we had a round of free beer for all.

New “South Route” is a hit…Hundreds of MMM Athletes checked out our new 3-mile route last Monday. They loved it! Here’s what they had to say…

• More shade (not sure that is fact)
• Safe
• Interesting…beautiful homes
• Less traffic
• Shorter

We gathered at the end to enjoy tasting smoothies at XOOM Juice. MMM thanks Ari Shapiro for this wonderful treat!

The “south route” is three miles and wanders past residential areas, historic sites and some great restaurants. It is safe and easy to follow. Click on “Route” on the website and print directions. When you check in at MMM each week, select from the two route options and alternate them as you please.

Moonlight Maynards a few degrees cooler…Rumor has it that some of our MMM Athletes have organized a small group that takes off after the 7:00 o’clock drawing. They call it “Moonlight Maynards” and we hear it’s at least a few degrees cooler. Maybe you would like to join them. Just remember to walk or run defensively, obey traffic signals and carry a flashlight if you are going to be out after dark. Have fun!

The new “COOL MMM” creates an Urban Fitness Phenomenon!…Many of our MMM Athletes have enjoyed the five new air-conditioned fitness options. Runners, check out OPTIONAL new runners’ route…This is an additional option for runners who prefer to run uninterrupted by traffic or the crowds. It is basically an out-and back run with little interruption.

Under underpass on 4^th and up the stairs to pedestrian bridge over 4^th

And continue toward Rattlesnake Bridge. Run 2,3,4,5,6,7 miles, or………..

Turn around when you are ready and run up 4^th Ave. to University, cross over and return to Maynards…adds one mile to the return run.
