Downtown Space Discovery

As a part of our Maynards to the Moon initiative, MMM is discovering spaces that make our downtown special. On intermittent Mondays our walkers/runners are invited to stop in and explore a downtown “space.”

Next Downtown Space Discovery!

It’s a downtown mural tour!

Leaves Maynards at 5:15 sharp…returns by 6:45 (or so)
Monday, March 25
Walking tour to see many of the beautiful downtown murals. The walk will be lead by Roni Swanson, one of our MMM regulars who has taken the time to  learn about the murals. Roni will give us a brief educational summary of each mural as we pass it. The walk will take up to 90 minutes, so please dress appropriately, with comfy shoes and bring your own water.

Next Downtown Space Discovery on April 8!

The Fox Theatre
The “crown jewel” of downtown!
Monday, April 8

5:15 to 6:30

Stop along your walk/run and take a brief tour of The Fox. See places within the theatre that the public rarely sees.  Don’t miss this great opportunity! Take a tour or just a brief peek along your way.

The Fox Theatre opened April 11, 1930 as a dual vaudeville/movie house. The Fox’s 40-year reign began with the biggest party Tucson had ever seen…Congress was closed to traffic and waxed for dancing! In the 1950’s The Fox was particularly known for their Saturday morning screenings of the Tucson Chapter of the Mickey Mouse Club. Competition from other theaters and the decline of downtown shopping caused The Fox to close in 1974. After 25 years, a small and dedicated group of people spent nearly a decade negotiating with the City of Tucson, raising funds and restoring the theatre. The Fox re-opened on New Year’s Eve 2006 (12/31/05) to reclaim its designation as the “crown jewel” of downtown Tucson. The Fox Tucson Theatre currently hosts approximately 175 events annually, welcomes more than 90,000 patrons through its doors, and has a $5 million budget.
